The Tata Nano is the cheapest passenger car in the world. Launched in 2008 the Nano comes in 3 petrol and 2 CNG variants priced from Rupees 1.96 to 2.58 lakh. The car was updated twice, but still the sales are not picking up. The Tata’s Nano plant in Gujarat is not working to the full capacity. The adverse publicity the car got is the main reason for the lack of customer interest. Tata has been thinking of introducing the diesel variant of the Nano for the last two years.
The Tata Nano Twist Car that was launched in February 2014 is the latest Tata Nano variant. During the 2014 auto expo, Tata Motors Limited has unveiled the Twist Active. The pundits have been opining that the Twist Active could be the fore runner for the Nano Diesel. But TML is quite tightlipped regarding the launching date and the specifications and features of the proposed diesel variant. With the diesel prices increasing and coming almost at par with that of the petrol, customers’ preference is shifting back to petrol cars. As per the speculators the launching of Nano Diesel will be further delayed as the demand for diesel cars in ‘A’ segment has not yet picked up.
TML was interested to launch the diesel Nano as there are no competitors with diesel variants in the segment. They want it to be the most fuel efficient city car. According to some sources TML is working on increasing the fuel efficiency of the Nano Diesel to bring it to 35 to 40 kmpl range and BSIV compliant. The Tata Nano Diesel is expected to be price between Rupees 2.4 to 3.25 lakh when launched.
The exterior of the Nano Diesel is expected to be similar to that of the existing variants with the Tata’s famous smiling front fascia. The ‘tall boy’ design with disproportionate height to length ratio is expected to remain same. As more cooling is required for the diesel engine the grille and the air dam will have to be modified. There will be new colours for the fabric upholstery, wooden inserts on the dash board, and an LED gauge for fuel inside the cabin.
TML will be using an 800 cc turbocharged engine for the Nano Diesel giving 40 bhp and 70 NM torque with 5 speed manual transmission. At least one variant can be expected with AMT transmission. The expected dimensions of the Nano Diesel will be 3099 mm length, 1495 mm width, 1652 mm height and 180 mm ground clearance.
The small cars like the Maruti Suzuki Alto, the Hyundai Eon and the Chevrolet Spark are the competitors for the Nano Diesel when launched.
